Question 2

What does it mean to be committed?

  1. So I'm sure there are many definitions of what committed means. I'm not going to look to a dictionary for this one. I'm going to share what I'm thinking which by no means is an exhaustive definition. But as I think about it, being committed is hard. It means to be in it for the long haul, but at the same time choosing everyday to be ready. It means counting the cost and making those hard choices. Thinking long term yet at the same time walking it out each day. Fighting for it, keeping it, finishing. Just writing this is hard because it shows me how much work still needs to be done in my life.

  2. Well i would like to think that there are things I am committed to, both by choice and not. I guess in order to commit to something you must really accept that you are willing to sacrifice some things in order to fulfill your commitment. I think the best example is somebody's job. IF we all could live without working, would anyone go to school or get a career? Maybe not, but since that cannot realistically happen, people become committed to their job and give up certain everyday pleasures in order to provide for themselves and possibly their families. I don't think a commitment is ever really easy, even for something that you may enjoy. When you make a commitment, you are giving your word that you will finish the duty you are signing up to do. So this contract you essentially create between yourself and a task, person, job, etc, becomes a duty that you have said you are willing to give up personal time to work with. Fully committing to anything is difficult because most of the time, it requires a significant life change. I think joining the military for me was a huge commitment, one that making any mistakes from their given lifestyle is really not tolerated. Tough thing to think about.

  3. Good post Robbie. Tougher to think about, even tougher to do.
